Meningitis Update
Meningitis B vaccination was introduced in 2015 and is routinely given to babies starting from 8 weeks old.
However, current national guidelines set by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) do not recommend vaccinating individuals over the age of 2 against Meningitis B at this time, even in response to the current outbreak in Kent.
Teenagers in Year 9 are routinely offered a vaccine against meningitis strains A, C, W, and Y (MenACWY). This vaccine protects against different strains of meningitis and does not cover the Meningitis B strain responsible for the current outbreak in Kent.
